Summer Work experience Prorgramme 2026

Over two fantastic weeks we hosted this year’s cohort of university students and graduates for work experience at Powell Gilbert.

The weeks were split between those having a legal or STEM background, all with a common interest in learning more about a career in IP. We were impressed by the enthusiasm, curiosity, and fresh perspectives that they brought to every activity!

The programme provided valuable insights into the world of IP, covering a variety of experiences including negotiation, claim chart analyses and presentation exercises, CV workshops and trips to court. Both weeks provided opportunities to develop professional skills and industry knowledge.

Alongside the work experience programme, PG was pleased again to support IP Inclusive’s Summer of IP & Careers In Ideas by hosting two engaging events on:

– Life as an IP Solicitor/Barrister
– Different Forms of Intellectual Property

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to making these initiatives such a success, including our panellists, speakers, attendees, and the many colleagues who generously gave their time and expertise.

LES-ASPI-AIPPI Life Sciences Conference 16 June 2026

Callum Beamish‑Lacey, Partner at Powell Gilbert, will be speaking at the LES-ASPI-AIPPI Life Sciences Conference in Paris tomorrow at 4:15pm.

Munich IPDR Forum

How are European courts’ approaches to FRAND rate-setting evolving?

As decisions across Europe continue to shape royalty-setting frameworks – from the early FRAND rulings by the UPC to evolving approaches in the UK and Germany – courts are increasingly confronted with complex questions around the licensing of SEP portfolios.

At the same time, the proliferation of IoT devices, the emergence of 6G technologies, and the rapid development of AI-related innovations are creating new licensing challenges, with which the courts will need to grapple, that may further influence how FRAND royalties are assessed and determined.

Powell Gilbert partner Bethan Hopewell will be speaking on Panel II, sharing an update on rate setting inside the courtroom, from 16:00 CEST.

Associates Andreas Ditler and Jason Yau are attending and looking forward to exploring these issues – and many more – during the Munich IPDR Forum on Thursday, 11 June.

Life Sciences EMEA Awards Dinner 2026

Last night Powell Gilbert achieved significant recognition at the Life Sciences EMEA Awards.
 
The firm and its partners received awards in the following categories:
 
Patent Litigation Firm of the Year: Medical Devices
Patent Litigator of the Year: BioTech – Penny Gilbert
Patent Litigator of the Year: Medical Devices – Siddharth Kusumakar
IP Rising Star – Callum Beamish-Lacey
 
The team also received awards for their involvement in 4 “impact cases” involving pharma, medtech, and biotech patents in the UK and UPC.

12th Annual IBA World Life Sciences Conference, Lisbon

Powell Gilbert’s Siddharth Kusumakar and Tess Waldron were at the 12th Annual IBA World Life Sciences Conference in Lisbon this week.

Sidd spoke on Beyond borders: rewriting the rules of global pharma patent litigation – a session set to explore how cross-border patent disputes in the pharmaceutical sector are continuing to evolve, while Tess co-hosted one of the conference’s Hot Topic Roundtables, discussing damages in pharmaceutical patent actions

Rocky Mountain IP Institute 2026

Partner Bryce Matthewson will be speaking at the 24th Annual Rocky Mountain Intellectual Property & Technology Law Institute next week (May 28–29).

LIDW 2026 – Can arbitration transform international IP disputes for Life Sciences companies?

Powell Gilbert are looking forward to co-hosting a panel with Three Crowns as part of London International Disputes Week (LIDW) 2026.  Powell Gilbert Partner Tom Oliver will be speaking on the growing use of arbitration in IP disputes.
